In the summer of 2003, Kamloops and the surrounding area was devasted by wildfire that destroyed over 80 homes, many businesses and over 62,000 hectared of of forest and range lands. Over 13,000 people were evacuated from their homes, hundreds left homeless and jobless and filled the normally blue skies into a smokey haze.
The Thompson Nicola Regional District commissioned Cameron Kerr of Vancouver, BC to create the the Wildfire Memorial, dedicated to the evacuees, the thousands of firefighters, emergency workers and volunteers that worked to assist those in distress and bring the wildfires under control.
